Application
The scope of applications for one-way clutches covers a wide spectrum from small office machines to heavy machinery and systems up to 2.5 mW and 20 km long conveyors.

Many designs have been developed to satisfy specific customer requirements, thus providing the optimum solution for their application.

1.Gear Reducers

Here one-way clutches are used as integral backstops in drive systems for conveyors, industrial fans, pumps, crushers, mixers, kilns and turbines. One-way clutches are also widely used as overrunning clutches in auxiliary or pony drives and dual-drive systems. Stieber offers solutions for long life and maintenance free operation.

2.Printing Machines

The classic application in printing machines is the inking roller auxiliary drive. But one-way clutches have also been used extensively as indexing devices, to provide an inexpensive and reliable means of achieving a mechanical variable speed drive for the inking roller main drive. Stieber know-how results in inexpensive, customised solutions even for the most demanding applications.

3.Conventional and Nuclear Power Plants

Stieber backstops are used extensively on pumps used in the primary and secondary cooling systems of power generating equipment. Stieber is certified to KT 1401 as an authorised supplier for the nuclear power industry.

4.Textile Machines

There is a wide range of applications for Stieber clutches in textile machinery, especially in circular knitting machines, thread preparation, bobbin winding and looms. In applications using sprag clutches the special Formchrome finish used in our ball bearing series of one-way clutches offers an exceptionally long life in overrunning applications.

5.Automotive Industry
There is a wide range of applications in the automotive manufacturing sector. Overrunning clutches on conveyor systems and engine test bed starter mechanisms, exhaust fan backstops in spray painting booths. The multiplicity of designs offered by Stieber offers the designer the best opportunity to achieve the perfect "fit".

6.Clay Pigeon Traps

In this common application a one-way clutch is used as a backstop to prevent the arm of the trap "bouncing" back after a launch. The rugged Stieber roller-ramp design provides a reliable solution for this demanding but price sensitive application.

7.High Voltage Switch Gear

Here a one-way clutch is used as a backstop to secure the actuating spring pre-load position. The quality and reliability of the chosen Stieber product ensures instantaneous applied torque and a firm "latch".

8.Agricultural Machinery

On seed drills a series of one-way clutches is used as an indexing mechanism to provide an infinitely variable speed drive. One-way clutches are also used for overrunning on round bale presses and as backstops for bulk conveyors and silo extractors. Stieber ball bearing series sprag clutches and self-contained designs offer simple and effective solutions for many applications in this industry.

9.Car Washing Gantries

To avoid damage to vehicles in the event of a drive system failure car washes use overrunning clutches in the horizontal roller drive. Stieber ball bearing series and self-contained roller-ramp designs can be very easily incorporated into chain sprockets, timing belt pulleys and other drive elements.

10.Rolling Mills

In the steel, and other metals industry one-way clutches are used as overrunning drives in roller conveyors. The speed of the conveyed material can momentarily be accelerated without any effect on the main drive.

11.Roller Coaster

On roller coasters one-way clutches are used for overrunning on the roller drives at the end station and as backstops in the main drive gearbox. Stieber standard and special designs provide the security demanded by both manufacturers and operators in these safety critical applications.

13.Fitness Machines

Stieber ball bearing clutches have proved dependable and durable in the flywheel assembly of superior quality rowing and stepper machines and novel drive systems in bicycles and manually operated wheelchairs.

14.Davits (Winches)

Stieber one-way clutches are used in combination with brakes to ensure the safe lowering and raising of rescue vessels on ships and off-shore platforms. New industry wide standards are satisfied by Stieber design and manufacturing quality.

15.Bow Thruster

Stieber one-way clutches are used as backstops to prevent reverse rotation of the thruster's propeller when not in operation. Units with centrifugally disengaging sprags offer a solution that can be easily incorporated into the drive gearbox and, under drive conditions, operate contact free to ensure a very long opera

16.Industrial Fans

One-way clutches are frequently used in multiple fan installations to prevent non driven fans from "windmilling" in the reverse direction.

17.Vertical Pumps

Large vertical pumps used in power generating plant cooling systems and for flood control frequently employ a backstop. Larger versions of the Stieber high speed backstop are ideal for these applications and may be mounted on the top of the pump or the electric motor.
